A Séance for the Girls Who Wandered

Acrylic painting on stretched canvas

22” X 28” X 1/2”

In "A Séance for the Girls Who Wandered," I wanted to capture pieces of my own youth-the fragments of myself that felt lost or scattered along the way. The puzzle pieces on her skin represent those unfinished parts of my identity, the way I struggled to feel complete back then, as if I was always searching for the missing parts.

The door and window are symbols of the thresholds we all face, those moments when we're on the edge of something unknown. For me, they signify the transition from girlhood to womanhood, that liminal space filled with both possibility and uncertainty. It's like looking back at all the paths I could have taken, and the versions of myself that I left behind.

The fish swimming around her remind me of thoughts and emotions that drifted beneath the surface, things I couldn't always express but felt deeply. There's a surreal quality to them, as if they're part of a dream, adding to the sense that this piece exists in a space between reality and memory.

The colors are intentionally bold and vivid-they represent the intensity of teenage years, that overwhelming rush of feeling everything so deeply. There's joy, pain, confusion, and hope all mixed together, just as it was in those years when every emotion seemed amplified.

And when I look at her face, I see myself, or at least a version of me from another time. Her expression holds that quiet, introspective energy, like she's looking inward, trying to understand herself. This is where the séance comes in-this idea of summoning the girl I once was, the one who wandered, who questioned, who felt everything. Through this piece, I'm reaching back to connect with her, to acknowledge her journey, and maybe to find a bit of closure for the parts of myself that still feel unfinished.

This painting is my way of honoring that girl, of holding space for her spirit, and acknowledging the beauty and complexity of that time.
